Choosing the Most Complementary Necklace Style for Your Neckline

Choosing the right jewellery to complement your neckline can help elevate your outfit and overall look. When choosing a necklace to match your neckline, you should consider a few questions along the way:

What do you want your necklace to do for you?

Decide if you want your necklace:

  • To steal the show or shine the spotlight on you or your outfit
  • Highlight your best features, emphasise your outfit
  • Make a statement all its own?

What’s the shape of your neckline?

The length, width, and shape of your neckline should help guide your decision. Here are a few tips to follow:
  1. Match the shape of your necklace to the shape of your neckline.
  2. If your neckline is low, don’t go lower with a necklace. You should balance out the length using a shorter necklace.
  3. Don’t add a statement necklace to a busy neckline.
  4. Don’t leave too much free space between your necklace and neckline.
  5. Use your necklace shape to narrow a wide neckline.

Here are some tips and guidelines on the best jewellery for the most common necklines:

Round neckline:

A round neckline (like a crew neck or scoop neck) is a classic style that goes very well with most types of jewellery.  A fail safe option is to make sure your necklace is also a round shape- for example, chokers or a short statement necklace that sits on the collarbone.

AVOID long necklaces that hang below the neckline as they may clash with the circular shape.

V-neckline:

A v-neckline is a flattering cut which elongates the neck. For this neckline, consider wearing a pendant necklace or a delicate chain that falls into the V-shape. Alternatively, you can accessorize with a choker or a short necklace that sits just above the neckline. For earrings, statement earring work well but make sure to keep the necklace simple to avoid over accessorizing.

AVOID long necklaces that hang too low and distract from the V-shape.

Square neckline:

Shorter necklaces that rest on the collarbone are perfect for this neckline.

AVOID wearing chunky or oversized jewellery that can overpower the square shape.

Strapless neckline:

For this neckline, consider wearing a bold statement necklace that sits high on the neck. You can also wear chandelier earrings or a chunky bracelet to balance out the bare shoulders.

Boat neckline:

A boat neckline is a wide, horizontal shape that shows off the shoulders and collarbones. This neckline is best left without any necklaces as it already emphasizes the neckline of the wearer. However, longer necklaces such as a long pendant or tassel necklace would work with this neckline. You can also choose to wear drop earrings or a bracelet which will help complement the length of the necklace paired with the boat neckline.

Off-the-shoulder neckline:

An off-the-shoulder neckline looks great with statement earring or chandelier necklaces that sit just above the neckline. You can also opt for a layered necklace to add some depth to the outfit or simply go for a effortless chain necklace which sits on your collarbone.

Collared neckline:

Collared necklines are best paired with simple stud earrings or delicate drop earrings. A statement necklace which isn't too over powering can look great with this neckline. Or if in doubt, a simple pendant necklace or a choker will also work.

Remember, these are just general guidelines, and you should always wear jewellery that makes you feel comfortable and confident. I strongly encourage you to experiment with different jewellery styles and combinations to find what works best for you.
